E. Sketch – Contro Luce
“A good snapshot stops a moment from running away.” Eudora Welty
Life is a tapestry woven with a myriad of fleeting moments, some of which eternally imprint themselves upon our existence. Such is the impact of groundbreaking inventions that shape the lives of millions. Take, for instance, the transformative moment when the camera was born, forever altering the course of human history. It was in 1827 that Nicéphore Niépce captured the world’s first photograph, marking the advent of photography—a medium that freezes life’s moments in captivating images. In this album, I have chosen to utilize the most accessible device at my disposal: my cell phone. It serves as my faithful companion, enabling me to sketch and preserve the essence of these precious moments. These photographs were not meticulously planned or orchestrated. Rather, they were taken spontaneously whenever my gaze was captivated by something extraordinary. It is not my intention to actively seek out photographic opportunities, but inevitably, I find myself inevitably drawn to immortalize these serendipitous encounters. Each snapshot contained within this collection encapsulates a fragment of life’s tapestry, a glimpse into the intricate interplay of light and shadow. Through the lens of my cell phone, I strive to capture the essence of the fleeting, to unveil the beauty that often goes unnoticed. In this dance between light and darkness, I seek to freeze those elusive moments, preserving their unique magic for eternity.

A sketch is an instantaneous and fervent act, a graceful dance of the eyes, hands, and body uniting with a tool upon a surface. Its purpose is to seize a fleeting moment and convey an idea or emotion. Enclosed within the following sketches is a visual narrative of 24 hours, meticulously captured in increments of ten minutes, documenting a profound slice of my life on October 2, 2014, in Cincinnati, OH. Sleeping On The Train
From the depths of prehistoric times to the present day, the art of drawing has accompanied humanity in various forms and for diverse purposes. It is an artistic expression that transcends the boundaries of a traditional studio space, requiring nothing more than a simple tool such as a pencil and a supportive surface like a sheet of paper. With a dash of creativity and honed skills, drawing allows us to visually encapsulate the moments of our everyday lives, preserving them on a tangible medium, while also serving as a canvas for our imaginations, thoughts, dreams, and memories. The act of traveling possesses the extraordinary ability to expand our horizons and enrich our mental landscape. Often, it is not until circumstances, such as the global upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, confine us to our homes that we fully grasp the profound importance and joy of exploration. It is during these moments of longing for the open road that we come to appreciate the transformative power of travel. Within this collection of sketches, I endeavor to capture the essence of my journeys by focusing on one particular facet: the portraits of individuals caught in a state of slumber while traveling on trains. In these fleeting moments, as they surrender to the rhythmic motion of the locomotive, a sense of vulnerability and tranquility envelops them. Their peaceful repose becomes a visual symphony, echoing the profound nature of travel itself. Through these sketches, I seek to transport viewers to the intimate world of train travel, offering glimpses into the lives of those who find solace and rest within the gentle embrace of a moving carriage. Each stroke of the pencil unveils a unique narrative, inviting contemplation on the universal human need for respite and the profound connections forged through shared experiences. As we embark on this visual exploration of “Sleeping On The Train,” let us revel in the realization that even amidst stillness, dreams continue to roam free, painting vivid portraits of untold stories and reminding us of the boundless capacity for imagination and discovery.
